Sibiu is not just any town in Romania.
I remember I first visited Sibiu many years ago and I liked it. It lived up to its reputation. But in 2021 when I revisited it, it looked absolutely blossoming, like a friend you haven’t met in a while and the time apart only highlighted their natural beauty.
Part of the National Retezat Park, these mountains are a must for any passionate hiker and wilderness lover. The area comprises around 80 glacial lakes and is largely untouched by human hand. The alpine pastures have a special glow. Moreover, not only nature reveals its true beauty here; you will also encounter a colourful palette of wildlife.
Prejmer is the ultimate fortified church.
Upon visiting it, you ask yourself if it’s more of a church or a fortification. Its walls are so thick and protective that it looks impenetrable.
And it was. Most of the times.
Southern and south-east Transylvania boasts with over 150 fortified churches which were erected centuries ago by the Saxons (although there are basically no Saxons left in Romania) out of protective reasons. The churches were built alone initially on top of the hill dominating the village landscape, and later surrounded by solid enclosing walls to protect the village from the invaders.
On top of the village hill, the Lutheran fortified Church of Biertan (Birthalm) (UNESCO World Heritage) lies majestically and watches over the village. It is definitely well positioned. I had a feeling that it would be somewhat different from the previous ones…and I was right! The access is made through some covered stairs
